Faculty Story

Richard Herb

FIDM Instructor Richard Herb has been working in the Interior Design industry for over 30 years but still finds time for other endeavors―showing off his California bungalow on Home & Garden Television and appearing on the network’s popular show Designer’s Challenge, for example. But despite his busy schedule and any fame he has earned along the way, Richard is just an Interior Designer committed to his work, FIDM, and his students. “I most enjoy the interaction with the students,” he says matter-of-factly. No doubt, his students most enjoy him as well.

How long have you been instructing at FIDM and what courses do you teach?

I started teaching at FIDM in 2003. I teach Residential Design Concepts, Kitchen Design, and Residential Design Thesis & Practice.

What characteristics must students possess to thrive in FIDM’s Interior Design Program?

Passion and commitment.

What do you believe is the most valuable tool for a successful career in Interior Design?

Spatial and design awareness―what I call the “Designer’s Eye.” It’s something that one has and develops over time with experience and confidence.

What other projects are you currently working on?

In addition to practicing Interior Design and teaching at FIDM, I consult in the Kitchen and Bath Design industry, have been writing a book on the Interior Design process, and I’m about to launch my own line of custom furniture designs. Most importantly, I am continually motivated by mentoring current and former FIDM Interior Design Students.
