Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I don't have enough money to follow the accessory trends. Can you help me pick out some basic timeless accessories, and tell me how to wear them?

Sincerely, Katt

Dear Katt,

What a great question! It's definitely frustrating when the super trendy accessories come and go in a flash, and then you're left with a jewelry box full of Buddha beads, fake belly rings, and pseudo tattoo chokers. Don't worry, you can create a timeless accessory collection on a limited budget. Like your wardrobe, think in terms of occasion and season. You want to look for timeless pieces that won't quickly go out of style. Buy a few key pieces that will work with any formal outfit, like a simple yet elegant pearl necklace and earrings. If you like gold and silver, it's good to have some of both. Get one of each of a medium-weight silver and gold chain. Then you can add trendy beads and trinkets to them as they come and go. Also look for accessories in basic black that are not extremely wild; simple items that don't call too much attention to themselves. Accessory shop at whatever discount stores are in your area. Don't buy anything that isn't on sale, and don't buy every accessory you see and like. This is a good way to be able to occasionally afford the trendier styles. Just remember not to overdo it! Here's a trick to avoid accessory overload. Before you walk out the door, take a quick look at yourself in the mirror. If one accessory immediately catches your attention, take it off. In other words, you want people to notice your overall appearance, and not just draw their eyes to one piece.

Good luck with the accessory hunt!
