Ask Fashion Girl
Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I don't know what to wear to an interview with a well-known dot com company. I know the atmosphere is more casual at dot coms in general but I don't want to seem unprofessional in my interview. Can you help?
Sincerely, Heather
Dear Heather,
With all the new dot com jobs popping up these days, this is a great question! What I'd recommend is a professional-looking suit, either with a skirt or pants in an interesting color like moss green, pumpkin, or plum. Wear it with a button-down-the-front blouse in a complementary color to the suit. If you can find it, a suit with a tiny bit of Lycra in the fabric will look the most modern. Don't go with a suit that is at all stuffy, conservative, corporate, or dated (some ensemble you've been wearing to job interviews since age 16). You might have to do some cool suit searching. Go to the hipper stores and boutiques rather than the more conservative department stores. Avoid boring traditional colors like navy blue and gray. Dot coms want to see that you're creative, young, alive, and forward thinking; but also able to pull it together.
Choose shoes that are hip and stylish but not too extremely trendy. Go with low heels and perhaps the new squared toes. No platforms or sandals, nothing super strappy, or too bright, stick with basic black. Wear shoes that make you look ready for a meeting as well as ready to move quickly, like you're ready for action.
Keep accessories simple but fashionable, like a techno-style watch and small stud or tiny hoop earrings. Make sure your makeup is light, but be sure to wear some, and a light shade of lipstick.
Lots of luck landing a job in cyberspace!Sincerely,
