Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I have a big problem! I am very fickle and I have so many different styles that it's hard to match them! I have so much trouble trying to find the styles that go together and which ones to avoid! Please help!!

Sincerely, Rebekkah

Dear Rebekkah,

Don't feel too bad, most of us have this problem! We see so many things we like, so we buy and then we end up with a closet full of mismatched things that don't go together! It's definitely a matter of serious self-discipline to say "no" to a bunch of apparel odds and ends that looked cute on the rack but don't make any sense in our closet. Not many of us can afford to try and buy every style; and even if we could, there are only so many hours in the day and so many days in the year. We can't wear everything! Time to make some personal decisions about what kinds of clothes and what style you want to represent you. Then get ready to pare down your closet and reform your shopping methods!

Here are some suggestions to get you on the right path. First, choose a few different looks that you really like. Second, decide on two or three colors that look especially great on you and complement each other. Think of this color combo as your own personal color palette. There are lots of great books at the library that explain which colors work best for your skin, hair, and body type. When you go shopping, buy only those colors. This way, everything in your wardrobe will work together, even if the items are slightly different styles. Putting the same (or even contrasting) colors together is a great way to coordinate and develop a striking look that people will notice!

As for what to avoid, try enlisting the help of your friends and family. Ask them to be completely honest and tell you what they've seen on you that just didn't work. Model your questionable outfits and get their opinions. Friends are great for this! Once you've got all this great feedback, it's up to you to bring it all together. Ultimately, we all have to choose our own signature looks, colors, and fabrics. No one can create your unique fashion image but you! Be firm with yourself when shopping. Remember, some clothes are better enjoyed and appreciated in the store or catalog rather than hanging in the void of our never-worn-closetland!

Good luck!Sincerely,
