Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I have short hair and am always looking for new styles. Do you have any for me?

Melissa

Dear Melissa:

Here are a few ideas for really short hair. You can put gel or pomade in it and slick it back, either with a side part or straight back. Let the very front stand up a bit -- that's called a"pompadour,"and was a very popular look for men in the 1950s. You can put barettes in when it's parted on the side, whether it's slicked back or not. I especially like rhinestone barettes, or some kind of novelty barettes, such as little bows.

Go for an edgy, punkish look. You can spike your hair up with gel and hairspray or with spiking pomade that you can get from a drug or beauty supply store. Or you can spike the ends down around your face and neck -- very retro and cool-looking.

Have you tried wearing a headband? That can be a fun look. Also, there are scarves to tie and wear in different ways. How about a long scarf folded narrowly and tied around your head with the ends hanging down? Or take a bandanna or small scarf and fold it into a triangle and tie it around your head. For nights out, try a flower pinned behind one ear. For very special occasions, try a very delicate diadem (like a tiara, but delicate and flat, not like a crown -- more like a headband) of pearls or delicate rhinestones.

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
