Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

What are the best colors to wear during winter months? How do you put together a warm and inviting outfit for winter celebrations?

Toni

Dear Toni:

With a little fashion forethought, there's no need to bulk up during the winter. Look for a coat that is shaped and contoured to the body rather than puffy, and which hits somewhere between the top of your thighs and your knees. Avoid jackets that end at the waist. Something sleek like black or brown leather would be really slimming.

Another secret to looking less bulky is layering. Layering a couple of thinner sweaters can keep you as just as warm as one big sweater or sweatshirt will, because each top you wear traps a layer of warm air, creating insulation. Instead of one big chunky sweater, try a turtleneck and two thin layers. Also, polar fleece, like they sell at Old Navy, is extremely warm without being heavy. For the best look, purchase a style that is contoured to your body to wear under your coat or jacket for extra warmth.

Wear tights under your pants for warmth. A cute hat is a great way to add warmth AND style. A cute long muffler and gloves can help as well.

Good luck with your cold-weather style and have a warm and cozy winter!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
