Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I really want to become a Fashion Designer! I love to design clothes, but I’m not old enough to go to FIDM. What can I do now to become a Fashion Designer?

Erika

Dear Erika:

It’s great that you already know that you want to become a Fashion Designer! It’s not too early to start preparing for your future career, and developing the skills and knowledge that you’ll need to be a great designer! Here are some things you can do now to launch your career in Fashion Design:

  • Read fashion magazines at the library.
  • Go shopping often and keep up with the new styles in the stores.
  • Shop in thrift and vintage stores and get to know the styles of the past.
  • Start drawing your ideas! Get a folder for your sketches, put dates on them, and keep them in order so that you can see the progress of your ideas.
  • Watch The Style Channel on TV.
  • Read books from the library about fashions of the past and about movie costumes.
  • Learn to sew! Take a class at school or in your community, or ask someone to help you learn.
  • Design and sew clothes for yourself and for your friends.
  • Become a member of FashionClub.com and keep in touch!

Being a Fashion Designer is a dream that really CAN come true! Stick with your dreams, develop your passion for fashion, and nothing can stand in your way!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
