Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I am fuller on the top of my body then my bottom, and some outfits make me look totally uneven. What clothing should I wear that won't make the top half of my body look so much bigger than the bottom?

Liza

Dear Liza:

Though it’s probably not much consolation in the real world, in fashion terms you have the sort of figure that can"wear anything,"and models on the runways share your proportions. But if you're thin and want to look a little less so, layering is for you. Wear two tee shirts so that one peeks out, add a sweater or a light jacket, or put a tank top over a long- or short-sleeved tee. In cool weather, chunky sweaters are made for you. A hot fashion look right now is wearing a dress or skirt over pants, and you have the perfect figure for it -- most of us can't pull it off. Wear a tartan mini, a vintage a-line, or a ruffled peasant skirt over your jeans. Cargos are a good pants look for you, and go for all the extra pockets and detailing that you can find!

One key to adding bulk to a slim figure is to look for ruffles, flounces, gathers, ruching, pockets, embroidery, sparkles, tulle, and any kind of extra fabric or frou-frou details, especially at the bust and hips. Fuzzy fabrics will make you look bigger. Stay away from stretch jeans and anything that's too tight or clingy. But also stay away from super baggy clothes, which will only make you appear thinner as well. Fit is very important.

Try the layering tip, and look for extra detailing at the hips and bust, and you should add pounds to your lean frame!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
