Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I want to become a buyer, but I'm confused in which direction I need to go to become a buyer. I now attend a community college and do plan to transfer. My counselor said I should attend a state college and obtain a degree there. But my question is: Is it necessary for me to attend a 4-year college and obtain a degree? Or can I attend FIDM and receive the equivalent amount or more knowledge and achieve my dream? I hope I'm clear.
Samantha
Dear Samantha:
You definitely don’t have to attend a four-year college to become a Buyer. FIDM offers a two-year degree program in Merchandise Marketing, which is the major that leads to a career as a Buyer. The Merchandise Marketing program gives you all the knowledge of an AA degree and it’s targeted to get you working in the industry quickly! Plus, you have the added advantage of FIDM’s Career Center . They are there to help students obtain internships and jobs in the Fashion Industry. The networking possibilities are amazing—as a FIDM student, you would have the ability to make contact with FIDM's 25,000 graduates in the fashion, entertainment, interiors, and graphics industries through alumni events, speakers, and Career Days.
So to recap, it takes two years to get your AA degree in Merchandise Marketing, which is the major that leads to the career of Buyer. If you already have your AA degree, you can get a Professional Designation degree in Merchandise Marketing, which would take 9 to 12 months.
There are some letters in my Fashion Girl archives on FIDM.edu about the career of Buyer that you might find interesting. Take a look!
Best of luck and if there’s anything more I can do, let me know!
