The Spa Professional's Choice

American Spa Magazine is first and foremost a trade publication. However, even those who are self-confessed spa junkies like me will find plenty of interesting information in every issue. Multiple spas are reviewed each month complete with tidbits such as how many square feet, product lines, popular treatments, and even the cost of the spa are provided along with tempting photographs that will make you want to sign up for a nice long massage.

Regular features include:

  • Destinations
  • Spa Radar
  • Industry News
  • Eye on Cuisine
  • Last Word (Practical Business Advice For The Spa Owner/Manager)

Helpful real-world advice is dispensed every month such as a recent article on how manicures and pedicures are now a huge part of the spa business and often underrepresented. Another very interesting subject covered in the review of new or renovated spas is information on how the spa menu or treatments were developed. Looking for some great new products but don't have the time or money for a facial? Then check out the recent article on how the Red Flower Japan skin care line got their start and what shapes their philosophy. The newest techniques or ingredients such as pomegranate are reviewed so that you will be familiar with all of the latest products. American Spa has something for everyone.

Edie: Girl on Fire is a visual documentation of the life and times of Andy Warhol’s greatest muse and asset. Filled with never-before-published photographs and film stills, the reader witnesses the rise and fall of a young and eccentric girl who never fully got hold of her own life. Edith Minturn Sedgwick was born into a family of wealth and famous ancestors. Though to outsiders her life seemed one of luxury, Edie was the quintessential poor little rich girl. Her tumultuous relationship with her father would be the thorn in her side that she never learned to remove.

Both a debutante and a member of an elite social circle, Edie was well received anywhere. Her choice to relocate to New York would be the grand entrance into the world of Andy Warhol. It would actually be Edie’s own personal contacts that would help launch Warhol’s career into newfound levels of success and open doors to him to a high society. Andy indulged Edie into becoming a member of his own group of friends and characters; downtown men and women with a penchant for drugs. It would be the latter that would become a life long struggle for Edie (and eventually the cause for her death).

Edie’s extreme beauty, pixie-like figure, charm and natural approach to fashion, turned Edie into a style icon. Her chandelier earrings and bottles of applied make up along with a pageboy haircut, gave way to an important look that even still represents the 60’s. Though towards the end of her life, Edie felt exploited, her life in pictures to this day are cherished and stand as an inspiration to many. Edie: Girl on Fire captures the pretty side of a wild girl who meant well.
